What seawall and dock problems come up most around Daytona?
Most waterfront calls on the Halifax River and its canals fall into a handful of jobs. Knowing which one you have helps the pro bring the right crew and the right equipment.
- Holes in the yard behind the seawall. Soil is washing out through a joint. Sealed and filled early, the wall can usually be repaired rather than replaced.
- A cracked, rusting cap. Salt water reaches the steel inside and the rust splits the concrete. The cap and the tiebacks under it are usually redone together.
- A wall leaning toward the water. The bottom has washed out or the tiebacks have failed. This is the point where repair and replacement costs get close.
- An old wall that needs replacing. Florida lets a rebuilt wall go on the old line or up to 18 inches in front of it without a state environmental permit.
- A new dock. Sized to your city's limit and the state's, with the county's manatee review for a new slip.
- Dock boards, beams and pilings. Boards wear out first; pilings decide between a repair and a rebuild.
- Boat lifts. Cables, switches and motors wear out long before the frame does.
Why do seawalls here need so much attention?
After Hurricanes Ian and Nicole in 2022, Florida's environmental agency counted about 154 oceanfront seawalls and revetments in Volusia County destroyed or badly damaged. Most of the walls lost in Daytona Beach, Daytona Beach Shores and Wilbur-by-the-Sea were more than 30 years old, with corroded steel, weak tiebacks and no drainage behind them. River and canal walls along the 23-mile Halifax River age the same way, just more quietly: a joint opens, the tide pulls soil out, and the yard starts to sink.
